What can you grow into as a tower crane operator?
With experience you can grow into roles such as site supervisor or construction site clerk, where you coordinate the work on the yard. Some operators move on to related machine work such as earthmoving equipment operator. Extra certificates and on-site leadership experience open the way to these steps.
Where does a tower crane operator work?
A tower crane operator works in the construction and public works sector, mainly on building sites with site machinery. The work is outdoors and at height, so you deal with weather, wind and long lines of sight. You coordinate closely with the ground crew who attach and guide the loads.
What is the difference between a tower crane operator and a self-erecting crane operator?
The difference is the type of crane. A self-erecting crane operator handles a fast-mounting crane that folds up and sets itself on smaller sites, while a tower crane operator works the larger fixed tower crane used on bigger projects. Both sling, hoist and distribute loads and follow the same lifting safety rules.
