As a dredger operator you operate the control systems of dredging equipment such as a hopper dredger or a cutter suction dredger. The job is also known as dredging worker or dredger skipper. You prepare the dredging vessel for work, position the vessel and the dredging gear, suck up dredging spoil and remove it. During dredging you also carry out first-line maintenance and repairs on the equipment, and you record data about the work. You always follow the safety rules and work with respect for the environment. It is outdoor work on the water, within construction and public works with site machinery. From Flanders, dredger operators keep waterways, ports and coastlines at depth, at home and far beyond.
