What is the difference between a steel structure fitter and a metal structure constructor?
The two terms describe closely related work. A metal structure constructor focuses on fabricating the elements in the workshop, while a steel structure fitter is the profile that assembles and installs those elements into the final structure, often on site and at height. In practice the tasks overlap and many workers do both.
How big is the demand for steel structure fitters in Flanders?
Industrial building, infrastructure and construction across Flanders rely on steel structures, so there is a steady demand for skilled fitters. Steel construction, shipbuilding and metalworking companies regularly look for people who can read drawings and weld to a specific process. If you like technical, physical work with a clear result, this is a solid trade to build on.
What qualifications do you need as a steel structure fitter?
There is no single compulsory diploma, but a technical training in metalworking or construction is a strong asset. A recognised welding qualification for a specific process and a VCA safety certificate are often required, and working at height may need extra safety training. Experience on site and the ability to read technical drawings count heavily.
