What does a data and network technician do?

As a data and network technician you install and repair data and communication networks and their peripheral equipment. You make sure the network performs well for its users and you always follow the safety rules. The role also goes by names such as network technician, fibre optic technician or data cabling installer. On site you prepare the work, set out cable routes, place cable trays and conduits, install and connect network equipment and then adjust and test the data communication network. You keep your work administration up to date, tidy the site and work in an environmentally conscious way. In Belgium you work in installation, maintenance and finishing, both on construction sites and in data centres.

Required skills

  • Technical insight into cabling and network equipment
  • Accuracy when connecting and testing installations
  • A VCA safety certificate is often required on site
  • BA4 or BA5 electrical safety knowledge is an asset
  • Comfortable working at height and on construction sites
  • Clear work administration and reporting

Indicative Belgian pay range: €20–€28 gross per hour. Extra certificates such as fibre splicing and experience with data centres push you towards the higher end. Employee pay estimate; actual pay depends on experience, sector pay scales and working hours. Premiums, overtime and benefits are separate.
