As a fire brigade sergeant you lead interventions for firefighting and emergency assistance. In Dutch the rank is also known as onderofficier brandweer, bevelvoerder brandweer or brandweeradjudant. As the first commanding officer on site you determine the intervention, mark out the intervention zone and draw up a provisional plan until the officer arrives. You extinguish fires, provide help and assistance in emergency situations and clear the public road. You also check equipment and gear, carry out administrative tasks and contribute to the policy of the emergency zone. You maintain your mental and physical fitness and always follow the safety regulations. In Flanders you work for an emergency zone, in a job where technique, safety and teamwork come together.

You usually grow into the rank from the position of firefighter and obtain the grade of sergeant through promotion exams. You follow courses at a fire service school and obtain the required certificates. Good physical condition and medical fitness remain a requirement throughout your career.
Can you start as a fire brigade sergeant without experience?
No, sergeant is a middle management rank for which you first build up experience as a firefighter, often also as a volunteer. If you want to join the fire service, you first pass the selection tests and the basic training. After that you can grow towards sergeant through promotion exams.
