Which diplomas or certificates do you need to become a firefighter?
You do not need a specific university degree, but you must pass the physical and medical aptitude tests and complete the federal fire service training. First aid or EHBO knowledge is essential, and a driving licence with truck categories helps if you want to drive the engine. Ongoing training keeps your certification and specialisations valid throughout your career.
Can you start as a firefighter without experience?
Yes, many firefighters begin as volunteers or trainees without prior experience. What counts most is passing the aptitude tests, being physically fit and completing the required training. You learn the trade step by step alongside experienced colleagues, first under close supervision and then with more independence as your certifications grow.
What can you grow into from a firefighter role?
With experience and further training you can become a corporal, engine driver or specialist in areas such as diving, gas suits or fire prevention, and eventually a team leader. The physical, technical and safety-focused nature of the work also connects to related outdoor trades. Roles such as forestry machine operator or timber construction carpenter show the kind of hands-on outdoor work that suits this profile.
