What will you do?
In Dutch the rank is also known as onderofficier brandweer, bevelvoerder brandweer or brandweeradjudant. As the first commanding officer on site you determine the intervention, mark out the intervention zone and draw up a provisional plan until the officer arrives. You extinguish fires, provide help and assistance in emergency situations and clear the public road.

Your foundation for this occupation
Fire sergeant is a leadership role governed by selection, training and promotion conditions. General management training alone is not an entry qualification. Consult the zone and Civil Security for the correct pathway. Operational knowledge must combine with overview and team responsibility.
From preparation to your first day
Develop the practical skills
In official training, practise clear assignments and combining observations. Make decisions understandable to the crew and work within command structure. Leadership includes recognising missing information and requesting further support.
Check your work
Check understanding and feedback on changing conditions. Debrief exercises openly and identify improvements. Keep training, equipment and records current. Preparation between incidents supports reliable crew performance.
How can you grow?
Development may lead to other ranks or specialisms under applicable conditions. Show learning from exercises and support for colleagues. Technical judgement and calm communication should both be evident.
