What will you do?
Often called a safety guard, confined space watch or gas analyst, you check the required permits before work starts and keep an eye on everything happening around you. You test alarm and safety installations, carry out gas measurements and spot unsafe or suspicious situations early. When an emergency such as an incipient fire breaks out, you step in, fight the flames and take emergency measures until help arrives.

Your foundation for this occupation
Fire and safety watchers monitor higher-risk work within a defined assignment. Clarify fire watch, safety watch and gas testing; they are not automatically interchangeable. Training must match the site, activity and equipment. General safety training does not authorise every measurement or rescue task.
From preparation to your first day
Develop the practical skills
Learn permits and related agreements. Confirm observation area, communication and stopping procedures with the responsible person. Practise reporting under supervision. Perform tests or interventions only when included in training and assignment.
Check your work
Make work changes visible because new conditions may require reassessment. Report deviations promptly and remain focused on the assigned watch. Document observations and handovers. A quiet shift is not permission to leave for other duties without coordination.
