What does a shunter do?

As a shunter, you help assemble and move railway vehicles within your assigned duties. People also call you a shunting operator or a railway manoeuvre agent. You prepare the trains, assemble them, split them up or bring them to the workshop. You compose train sets, position them on the platform or in the sidings, drive specialised locomotives and manoeuvre on special lines. Train for additional vehicles, locations or roles through appropriate pathways. Ask about outdoor work, irregular hours and physical tasks. Depot, large yard and freight operations can differ.

  • Compose and assemble the train sets

What does a shunter earn?

Indicative Belgian pay range: €16–€23 gross per hour. Experience and the railway operator shift that figure, and shift, night or weekend premiums often apply. Employee pay estimate; actual pay depends on experience, sector pay scales and working hours. Premiums, overtime and benefits are separate.
