Which diplomas or certificates do you need as a facility manager?
Many facility managers hold a bachelor degree, for example in facility management, real estate or a technical field, but experience weighs at least as heavily. Knowledge of contract management, budgets and regulations matters more than a specific certificate. You can also grow into the role from a technical or administrative position and learn the trade in practice.
Can you start as a facility manager without experience?
You rarely start at the top without experience, but the path in is very accessible. Many people begin as facility assistant or facility coordinator and take on more responsibility step by step. A background in technical services, administration or building maintenance is a strong starting point.
What can you grow into as a facility manager?
You can grow towards managing larger sites or several buildings, towards contract management or towards leading a complete department. The role also connects closely with the technical professions you coordinate every day, such as Electrical installer, Installation fitter or Burner technician, which makes a technical background a real asset.
