Your foundation for this occupation
Facility managers organise services that enable other people's daily work. Clarify the portfolio: buildings, cleaning, catering, workplaces, suppliers or several areas. Facilities training helps with contracts and budgets, but you must also translate user needs into measurable agreements.
From preparation to your first day
Develop the practical skills
Develop a request from need to follow-up. Define delivery, timing, quality and exception ownership. Compare offers on scope and total use costs, not headline price alone. Involve users in space or service changes to expose practical obstacles early.
Check your work
Verify performance through observations, reports and agreed measures. A signed service sheet does not automatically mean the user was helped. Track recurring complaints and distinguish poor execution from unclear requirements. Keep budgets, contract dates and planned work aligned.
How can you grow?
Progression includes wider site responsibility, contract management and facilities strategy. Change management, supplier discussions and reasoned cost choices are useful. Show how you combined service quality with feasible delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Is facilities management the same as technical maintenance?
Maintenance can be part of the portfolio, but facilities often also covers services and workplace use. Technical maintenance management focuses more on equipment and reliability. Ask how responsibilities are divided.
