What is the difference between a cable installer and a catenary fitter?
A catenary fitter specialises in the overhead lines that power trains and trams. As a cable installer you work more broadly: you lay cables and pipes for all kinds of distribution networks, from electricity and public lighting to data, water and gas, both above and below ground. The catenary trade is one specialised branch within that wider field.
Is there strong demand for a cable installer in Flanders?
Yes, the demand is high across Flanders. Electricity grids are being reinforced, fibre optic networks are being rolled out and public lighting keeps being renewed, and all that work needs skilled installers. Companies in network construction are constantly looking for people who want to work outdoors and learn a technical trade.
What qualifications do you need to become a cable installer?
No specific diploma is required, although a technical background in electricity or construction is a strong foundation. A VCA certificate is often required to work on sites, and for work near electrical installations a BA4 or BA5 attestation is a real asset. Most of the trade you learn on the job from experienced colleagues.
