What career growth opportunities does a cabinetmaker have?
With experience you can grow into a master cabinetmaker or specialise in restoring antique furniture, a niche where craftsmanship is highly valued. In larger furniture workshops you can also take the lead of a team. And if you ever want a different craft, your precision and manual skill transfer well to other trades, for example as an alterations tailor.
In which sectors and environments does a cabinetmaker work?
You work in the wood industry, from small furniture workshops to larger production companies. Some cabinetmakers focus on custom furniture, others on series production or the restoration of old furniture. It is manual, creative and technical work at the workbench and at the woodworking machines.
What is the difference between a cabinetmaker and a carcass maker?
A carcass maker specialises in building the body of a piece of furniture, the frame of panels that forms the base of cupboards and cabinets. As a cabinetmaker you master the whole process: from marking out and machining the parts to assembling, veneering and finishing the complete piece of furniture. Carcass making is one of the steps within your broader craft.
