As a brick pointer you point masonry with mortar or synthetic filler and give facades and walls a clean finish. In Dutch the trade is also known as voeger or cementeerder. You set up the site, prepare the work and mix the mortar and filler. You then point the brickwork, grout tiles and seal the joints around adjoining elements. Flexible pointing with synthetic sealant and waterproof finishing can be part of the job as well. After the work you tidy the site. You work safely and with respect for the environment, often outdoors and at height on scaffolding. In Flanders you usually work in the structural building sector, in small specialised pointing companies or as a subcontractor on construction sites, where physical work and precision go hand in hand.

What does a brick pointer do?
A brick pointer fills and finishes the joints of masonry with mortar or synthetic filler. You set up the site, mix the mortar, point the brickwork and grout tiles. You also seal the joints around adjoining elements and leave the site clean and tidy afterwards.

What is the difference between a brick pointer and a cement finisher?
A brick pointer fills and finishes the joints in masonry, so the individual bricks stay visible. A cement finisher, in Dutch a cementeerder, covers the whole wall surface with a layer of cement render. Both trades often work on the same facades and many professionals combine the two skills.
Is there demand for brick pointers in Flanders?
Yes, pointing is a specialised finishing trade within the structural building sector, and skilled pointers are hard to find. New construction as well as facade renovation keeps generating work across Flanders. Contractors regularly look for pointers who deliver neat, precise work and can operate independently on site.
Which diplomas or certificates do you need as a brick pointer?
You do not need a specific diploma to become a brick pointer. You learn the trade on site or through a construction course, and employers mainly look at the quality and neatness of your work. A VCA basic safety certificate is requested on many sites, so obtaining it early is a smart move.
