Metal production operator: career guide and training

As a metal production operator you supervise semi-automatic and automatic equipment that deforms or treats metal.

What will you do?

As a metal worker or surface treatment operator you check the production order, supply the machines, set the parameters and start and monitor the installations. You watch the production, check the quality of the products, solve malfunctions and carry out first-line maintenance. You follow the safety rules and production requirements and work with respect for the environment.

Skills to develop

  • A technical training in metalworking or a production field is a strong asset
  • Ability to read a production order and follow procedures
  • Attention to quality and to safety devices
  • Basic maintenance and troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to work in shifts and with respect for the environment

Your foundation for this occupation

Find out whether the vacancy involves forming, treatment or several automated stages. Machine-operation training covers orders, material identification and checks. Ask whether changeovers belong to you or a setter. Surface treatment particularly requires process-specific instruction rather than general metal experience.

From preparation to your first day

  1. Develop the practical skills

Practise matching material to the order and recognising the required orientation. Follow a trial piece through the machine and compare it with inspection instructions. Record when settings or material batches change during a series. Interventions must follow the safe work procedure.

  2. Check your work

Check dimensions or surfaces using the designated method and record deviations by batch. Segregate rejected pieces as instructed. Learn to report small recurring defects before they affect a whole run. Production quantity alone does not describe the quality of your work.

How can you grow?

Progression includes setter, senior operator or shift responsibility. A different metal process often needs new equipment knowledge. Compare part size, automatic feeding, measurement duties and shifts. Give an interview example of identifying and following up a defective run.

Frequently asked questions

Does an operator write machine programs?

It depends on the role. Often you select an approved program and make permitted adjustments. Programming or developing a new process may belong to a setter or planner. Ask which changes you can make and which require checking.
