Lifeguard: career guide and training

As a lifeguard you supervise swimmers and make sure no accidents happen at the pool or the open water.

What will you do?

You keep watch over the swimming, assist people in need and decide how to run a rescue operation when it counts. You explain risks and interventions, train your rescue and first aid techniques and keep the premises clean.

Your foundation for this occupation

Choose recognised lifeguard training for the setting. Flanders' Hoger Redder qualification requires recognised annual refresher training. Pools, coast and open water do not automatically share a pathway. Ask about training and practical assessment.

From preparation to your first day

  1. Develop the practical skills

Learn focused observation across your zone. Practise communication and interventions in training, not from written instructions alone. Clarify handovers and other duties so cleaning or reception does not obscure who is supervising.

  2. Check your work

Check assigned equipment and facilities. Report risks and record incidents factually. Stay attentive during quiet periods and join drills. Ask about breaks, schedules and support.

How can you grow?

Specialise by environment or progress to coordination and teaching with suitable qualifications. Compare seasonal and permanent duties and refresher support. Swimming ability alone is insufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Does a swimming certificate qualify me as a lifeguard?

No. It does not replace the required lifesaving qualification and refresher training. Verify the specific location's requirements.
