What will you do?
You balance heating installations, verify that boilers and networks are compliant and check and replace pipework. When something breaks you diagnose the fault and solve it, commission taps and sanitary appliances and repair devices for hot water preparation. The role is also known as heating maintenance technician, plumber or energy maintenance technician.

- Clean up the site and work safely and with respect for the environment
Skills to develop
- Technical insight into heating and sanitary installations
- Ability to read installation schemes and take measurements
- Independent and safety-minded way of working
Your foundation for this occupation
This role builds on installation skills but concentrates on measurement, adjustment and explaining faults. You need to follow a hydraulic diagram and understand how pumps, controls, valves and heat emitters interact. Choose training with real diagnostic assignments rather than only connecting a new appliance.
From preparation to your first day
Develop the practical skills
Investigate a heating circuit where one emitter does not warm adequately. Compare the controls, hydraulic arrangement and measured conditions before identifying a component as the cause. Record readings together with settings and operating conditions. The same complaint can arise from control, circulation or user-operation issues.
Check your work
After the intervention, establish whether the issue is resolved during normal use. Check heat distribution, fault indications and control settings. Explain relevant controls to the user and document what you measured, changed and could not yet verify in the service report.
How can you grow?
Additional training can lead to hydraulic balancing, heat-pump servicing or building controls. Recognition for certain boiler activities and certification for refrigerant work are separate pathways. Service coordination also requires useful remote diagnosis, spare-parts planning and clear customer agreements.
Frequently asked questions
Why does replacing a boiler not always solve a cold room?
The heat source is only one part of the system. Controls, circulation or distribution between heating circuits can also cause the problem. A technician therefore investigates the complete installation and connects readings to the reported symptoms. Ask a training employer whether you can perform supervised diagnoses and review your reasoning with an experienced colleague.
