What will you do?
Also known as a fishing captain, fishing master or helmsman, you draw up the route, pilot the vessel and keep watch over its navigation. You plan the fishing, identify suitable fishing grounds and supervise the manoeuvres of the ship during the catch. You check that materials and equipment work, carry out and supervise daily maintenance and coordinate your team on board.

Your foundation for this occupation
Skipper duties require more than deck experience. Check training, sea service, medical documents and certification for vessel and area with an approved provider or authority. Mate and skipper responsibilities differ; progression is not automatic after several voyages.

Develop the practical skills
Learn to consider planning, crew, equipment and operational data together. Practise decisions and communication in training. Voyage planning includes task allocation and crew information. Keep decisions and required records through procedures.
Check your work
Check documents, crew and deployment fit the assignment. Monitor vessel and equipment and organise handovers. Responsibility extends beyond catch. Explain balancing technical, human and scheduling factors at interview.
