As an engraver you engrave or chisel objects such as jewellery and decorative pieces in materials like metal, minerals and crystal. In Dutch the trade is also known as ciseleerder, etser or kunstgraveerder. You analyse the customer's request and define the artisanal production steps. You then select the right materials and tools, keep your instruments sharp and reproduce motifs by hand on each object. You stamp, incise or remove material and give every workpiece a careful finish, always following the hygiene and safety rules. In Flanders you work in the arts and crafts sector, often in a small studio where creativity, technique and manual work come together.

Which sectors and environments do you work in as an engraver?
You mainly work in the arts and crafts sector, with a focus on decoration. Think of studios that personalise jewellery, glassware, mirrors or natural stone. It is a creative and technical profession where manual work is central, often in small workshops or as a self-employed craftsperson.
What is the difference between an engraver and a chaser?
An engraver cuts or removes material to bring a motif into the surface. A chaser, in Dutch a ciseleerder, shapes the metal with punches and chisels so the relief appears without removing material. In practice many craftspeople combine both techniques, which is why the combined job title engraver-chaser exists.
Is there demand for engravers in Flanders?
Engraving is a specialised niche within arts and crafts, and experienced craftspeople are rare. The demand for personalised jewellery, gifts and decoration keeps generating assignments across Flanders. If you master the craft and work in a customer-oriented way, you regularly find work in studios or as a self-employed engraver.
