Which diplomas or certificates do you need as a commercial diver?
You almost always need a recognised commercial diving certificate, together with a medical examination confirming you are fit to dive. Sport diving certificates are not sufficient for professional work underwater. Extra qualifications such as underwater welding, and often a VCA certificate on work sites, considerably increase your chances.
Can you start as a commercial diver without experience?
Without training as a commercial diver you cannot dive professionally on your own, because the safety requirements are strict. You can, however, start as a surface assistant and get to know the trade and the equipment that way. If you then complete a recognised commercial diving course, you can move on to real diving assignments.
What can you grow into as a commercial diver?
With experience you can grow into dive team leader, dive supervisor or specialisations such as underwater welder and ROV pilot. If you love working outdoors and on the water, related jobs such as fishing deckhand or fishing vessel skipper are options too. Your technical baggage is also welcome in trades such as timber construction carpenter.
