Which diplomas or certificates do you need to become a childcare worker?
In Flanders you usually need a recognised qualification in childcare, for example a diploma in childcare or an equivalent certificate of competence. A first aid certificate focused on young children is often requested as well. If you do not have the qualification yet, you can obtain it through adult education or learning on the workfloor.
Can you start as a childcare worker without experience?
Experience is not the biggest hurdle, the qualification is. Many people start right after their studies, and daycare centres are used to coaching starters on the workfloor. Without the right qualification you can often start in a supporting role, for example as a logistics assistant in a daycare centre, and grow towards the childcare qualification while working.
What can you grow into as a childcare worker?
Within childcare you can grow towards coordinating roles, such as responsible for a daycare centre, or start as an independent registered childminder. Some childcare workers specialise in caring for sick children at home.
