Quality control inspector: career guide and training

As a quality control inspector you check the quality of industrial products, processes and services.

What will you do?

You prepare technical checks, carry out functional tests and conformity controls and report on what you find, keeping to the quality standards, quality procedures and specifications. Also called a quality controller, production quality controller or test operator, you interpret control data and verify that the measuring and testing instruments themselves conform. In Vlaanderen this is a technical role focused on research, quality and safety, and it keeps industrial output reliable and compliant.

  • Prepare technical checks
  • Carry out functional tests and trials
  • Perform conformity controls
  • Draw up inspection and control reports
  • Interpret the control data
  • Check that measuring and testing instruments conform

Skills to develop

  • Precision and a methodical way of working
  • Ability to read technical drawings and specifications
  • Comfort with measuring and testing instruments
  • Clear reporting of inspection results
  • Knowledge of quality standards and procedures
  • A background in mechanics, metalworking or electronics

Your foundation for this occupation

Quality inspection translates technical requirements into reliable measurements or tests. Prerequisites depend on the product: metal dimensions and electronic function tests need different tools. Ask which drawings, tolerances, instruments and recording systems you use, and who authorises acceptance of deviations.

From preparation to your first day

  1. Develop the practical skills

Start from the correct document revision. Check product identity, method and instrument status before recording a value. Compare repeated measurements and investigate unexpected results without measuring towards a preferred answer. A value lacking units, test conditions or traceable product identification has limited use.

  2. Check your work

Separate observations from conclusions. Identify potentially affected pieces or batches and prevent rejected products from progressing unnoticed. Confirm the instrument is suitable and within its required inspection interval. Refer interpretation doubts to the responsible person; a small deviation is not automatically acceptable.

How can you grow?

Specialisations include metrology, supplier quality, process quality and documentation. Certain inspection methods require specific training and qualifications. An anonymised report and an explanation of separating measurement error from product defects can support an application.

Frequently asked questions

Is quality inspection simply about finding faults?

It provides dependable evidence for production and quality decisions. Consistent measurement, traceable reporting and identification of affected products are central. A passing result must also demonstrate that the correct method and criteria were used.
