What does a Roofer do?

As a roofer you build and finish roofs with tiles, slates or metal sheets. You set up the site, assess the state of the existing roof and remove old coverings before laying the new one. You install insulation, vapour barriers, gutters and downpipes, and you make flat roofs watertight. Sometimes you also finish facades. The trade is also known as roof fitter, waterproofing specialist or flat roof installer, and you always work to strict safety rules while working at height. What does a Roofer do?

A roofer builds and repairs roofs with tiles, slates or metal sheets. You set up the site, assess and remove the old roof and then lay the new covering. You install insulation, vapour barriers, gutters and downpipes, and you make flat roofs watertight, always working to strict safety rules at height.

How much does a Roofer earn in Belgium?

A roofer in Belgium usually earns between 15 and 22 euros per hour gross. The exact wage depends on your experience, the employer and the type of roofing work. A foreman role and specialised skills push the pay towards the top of that range.

Which diplomas or certificates do you need to become a roofer?

You do not strictly need a diploma to start as a roofer, but a construction or roofing course from a training centre is a strong advantage. A VCA safety certificate is requested on many sites, and training in working at height is important. Much of the trade is learned on the job alongside experienced colleagues.

Can you start as a roofer without experience?

Yes, you can start as a roofer's helper without experience and learn the trade on the job. You begin by preparing the site, carrying materials and assisting experienced roofers, then gradually take on laying coverings and waterproofing yourself. A good head for heights and physical fitness matter more than a diploma at the start.

What can you grow into as a roofer?

With experience you can grow into a foreman or team leader in roofing, coordinating a crew and the site setup. You can also specialise in green roofs, solar panel installation or the restoration of historic roofs. Related trades such as timber construction carpenter are also within reach.
